PineConeWisdom is a new project by Drew Wright AKA Wounded Knee. 'Argyle & Beauty' sees Drew returning to his experimental roots, albeit filtered through a pop sensibility - lots of little nuggets of sound mean that nothing outstays its welcome. The music is abstract and impressionistic, with repetition and drones a recurring theme. Charlemagne Palestine, Alvin Lucier and Papa M are the big influences here, the latter given explicit props on the churning guitar loops of 'Papa M saved my life'. Although Drew's voice features, it is less prominent than usual, instead part of a sonic palette including guitar, shruti box, piano and delay pedal. The other main presence on the record is Drew's current studio and playground: Argyle House, an enormous, Brutalist style edifice in the heart of Edinburgh's old town. Part of the building used to be a Job Centre but is now occupied by The Forest arts organisation, providing cheap studio, rehearsal and business space for the city's artistic community. All the sounds on 'Argyle & Beauty' were recorded there, as PineConeWisdom roamed the empty offices, vaults and stairwells, bringing a kind of rustic pagan ritualism to this corporate concrete space.
